Reduce microfibers when washing – practical solutions for the home

During washing, tiny fibers detach from textiles and enter the wastewater. This can't be completely prevented, but the amount can be significantly reduced – with simple, everyday steps that simultaneously protect fabrics and prevent odor.

What are microfibers – and where do they come from
Microfibers are tiny fiber particles that detach from the fabric's surface due to friction, high temperatures, and chemicals. The harsher the laundry treatment, the more abrasion occurs. Stretchy, functional fabrics are particularly affected—the very ones we love for training because they dry quickly and fit comfortably.

Wash more gently
Cool programs at 30°C, a mild liquid detergent, and a well-filled but not overloaded drum reduce abrasion. A drum that's too empty causes clothes to rub against each other more, while one that's too full slows down the rinse performance. A fine laundry bag further reduces friction and protects seams.

Use filters and bags
Special washing bags and external filters can measurably retain washed-off microfibers. This effect isn't a free pass, but it's a useful tool. It's important to dispose of the collected residues in the household waste, not down the drain.

Dry properly
Air-drying protects the fiber structure better than using a dryer. Heat fatigues elastane, reduces recovery, and promotes future wear. Airing out between washes prevents you from washing too often out of routine.

Detergents and additives
Less is more: sparing use reduces residues that, when combined with sweat, cause odors. Fabric softener feels pleasant for a short time, but can weaken the fibers. If necessary, an additional rinse cycle helps remove residues.

Make purchasing decisions more consciously
Durable, densely knitted fabrics with a smooth surface resist abrasion better. Those who buy less, but more selectively, and care for them well produce fewer microfibers in the long run – and at the same time, enjoy their items longer.

Conclusion:
Avoiding microfibers completely is unrealistic, but the amount can be significantly reduced. Wash in cool water, use sparingly, use a laundry bag and filter, air dry, and choose more consciously – this is good for your clothes, your skin, and the environment.
